Butler Gym and the campus clock

The clock was installed to replace one in the tower of Lynch Hall (renamed De La Roche after renovation) which was destroyed after a lightning strike and fire in that building.

It came from the defunct First National Bank in Hornell, NY.  It was originally placed in a pool, complete with goldfish donated by the Harvard Antivivisectionist Society, and had a new base built for it.  It underwent a restoration and renovation in the late 1950's.

The Latin inscriptions, written by Father Thomas Plassman, which appear on the four sides of the base read:  Tempus Dei Gratia, "Time, God's Gift" (east); Tempus Sunat Vulnera, "Time Heals All Wounds" (south); Tempus Horrat Otia, "Time Hates Laziness" (west); Tempus Fundit Munera, "Time Dispenses Gifts" (north).
