Overview

Congressman James T. Walsh has passed various laws for funding of Hancock Air Force base. While being used as an Air Force base during the World Wars, Hancock is now an international airport which is located 4 miles northeast of Syracuse, New York. Since 1947 there had been fighter pilots flying in and out of Hancock Air Force Base, but Walsh knew that something had to be done to keep this up and running. Walsh began to work with local officials to fund $70 million to support Hancock.

As described on the Hancock  Field main website, " In 1927, Mayor and former World War I flyer Charles Hanna felt that the economic future of Syracuse would be greatly enhanced by a first class airport."

"In 1962, a new airport terminal opened in the center of the airfield to provide access to the planned Interstate 81, with Mayor William Walsh and Airport Commissioner Frank Pittenger present to dedicate the new terminal."
