The
Collection
The purpose of the Audio-Visual Collection of
the Friedsam Memorial Library at St. Bonaventure University is
to provide a wide range of materials to underwrite classroom
work, and to supply items of general interest (but of lasting
value) to students of the liberal arts curriculum. The main
areas of collecting are in film studies and music.
The format of the materials in the film collection is both
video cassette tape and DVD. An effort has been made to keep
current with the better independent and foreign films that
have received a general release in the United States. Many of
the video tapes are “out of print” and not represented in
DVD form yet. Access to all the film materials is through the
online catalog, the A-V webpage, notebooks of photocopied
covers, and a small portion on open display.
The main categories of the music collection are Rock/Pop,
Jazz/Blues, Classical, and World, with smaller collections of
Folk/Country and Soundtracks. Most materials in the music
collection are displayed openly, but there are a large amount
of classic jazz box sets also that can be retrieved through
the online catalog.
There is also a small (but growing) collection of Spoken
Word materials consisting mainly of literary works.
Finding AV Materials
You may search by author/title or subject in our online
catalog, but unfortunately it is not currently possible to
search by format in our catalog. WorldCat is useful for
searching by format. Faculty members can request a login for
the full version of WorldCat, while others are free to use
Open WorldCat. Search
for your title or subject, and then look for the "Refine
Your Search" column on the left. Scroll down to "Format" and
select "Visual Materials."
