St. Bonaventure University
Buffalo Center students & faculty

Please remember that the Buffalo Center & Main Campus Libraries are always available  to assist you!!

Friedsam Memorial Library endeavors to make the world of information accessible to the university community.  To that end, the library has built, and continues to build, a strong traditional collection of materials (over 250,000 books, 500 print periodical subscriptions, 60,000 bound periodical volumes, and thousands of electronic periodicals), along with access to electronic sources online through the Internet.  In all this the library seeks not only to support university instruction with appropriate materials and access, but also to foster independent investigation and research by the university community.

Besides the main collection there are a number of specialized collections that the library maintains.  The Curriculum Center contains materials and textbooks supporting the School of Education.  The Government Documents Collection is composed of materials the library obtains through its status as a regional selective depository of federal and New York State government publications.

The library also has collections of unique resources that are of national and international importance.  In its coverage of the Franciscan movement, the Franciscan Institute Library is unmatched in the western hemisphere and can be equaled by only a few European libraries.  The Rare Book Collection contains nearly 10,000 items including late medieval manuscripts and early printed books.  The Special Collections section of the University Archives contains important materials on Thomas Merton, Robert Lax and Jim Bishop.

The Florentine-style building housing the library has one of the most beautiful reading rooms in the Western New York area.  The original building, constructed in 1937, was expanded in 1974, retaining as an interior design factor the outside brick walls and tying the new floors to the old by means of a dramatic staircase.  If you have not been to the SBU campus yet, please come down to visit!

St. Bonaventure Buffalo Center students are welcome to utilize the reference services available at the St. Bonaventure campus library. Reference service can be obtained by sending e-mail to or by phoning 375-2164.  The phone number for the Information Desk at Hilbert's McGrath Library is 649-7900, ext. 361. You can also use our 24/7 virtual reference service via the icon below:

McGrath Library generously extends borrowing privileges to St. Bonaventure Buffalo Campus students.  Books may be borrowed for two weeks (fines for overdue materials are 25 cents per day).  This excludes reference books, which are for library use only.  A valid and barcoded St. Bonaventure student ID is required to check out books.  Students may not take out more than five books per day or have more than 15 books out at the same time.  A book may be renewed once (unless a "hold" has been placed on it).  If the library catalog indicates that the book that you are looking for is checked out, stop at the Reference desk.  You may ask that the book be held for you upon its return.  You will be notified when it becomes available.

Current issues of magazines and journals available at McGrath Library are located on the second floor; newspapers are on the first floor.  Previous editions can be requested at the Reference Desk with a valid student ID.  Periodicals are for use inside the library only (not including computer lab or classrooms), and your ID is held until you return the items to the desk.  Periodicals may be photocopied

Faculty members sometimes place books or articles on reserve.  This allows the material to be available for the entire class.  Reserve material may be requested at the Reference Desk at the Hilbert Library.  It is for library use only and may be photocopied.  Your ID will be held at the desk.

An electronic reserve service is available from Friedsam Memorial Library via the Internet.  The link to the service is on the library's home page, and can be accessed directly via .  Login with your normal SBU login. Once logged in, click on "Electronic Reserves (Library)."

The photocopier is located on the first floor of McGrath Library.  Copies are $0.05 each, payable to the librarian at the Reference desk.  Change is available at the desk.

Food and drink are allowed in the McGrath Library at Hilbert College.  Drinks are allowed in Friedsam Memorial Library at St. Bonaventure University, provided that they are in covered, non-spillable containers.

Books and journal articles not available in the McGrath Library can be obtained either from the St. Bonaventure Library or through InterLibrary Loan. If the St. Bonaventure Library does not own the title you need, it can be ordered for you from another library.  In general, if the St. Bonaventure Library owns the material, you will receive it within 3 to 4 days. If it is necessary to obtain material through InterLibrary Loan, material should arrive in 1 1/2 to 2 weeks.

When you wish to request material, please do the following:

Check SBU's Online Catalog to see if Friedsam Memorial Library has the item.  If it is available, please submit request to McGrath Library staff using the InterLibrary loan request form on the Library webpage.  Inform the staff member that the book is available through Friedsam Library.

If the item is not available through Friedsam Library, please ask the McGrath Library staff to order it for you via InterLibrary Loan.

COMPUTER RESOURCES (Databases & Lab Information)

St. Bonaventure University has a computer lab on the Hilbert campus, which offers complete Internet access, e-mail, and the Microsoft Office software suite. The lab is located on the first level of the library building, in the hallway beyond the glass door past the restroom area.  You may enter the lab at any time when the library building is open.  If the library is closed, please contact the College’s campus safety office (716-479-1233) to gain entrance.  Outside doors are locked when the library closes, and the doors will lock behind you when you leave.

St. Bonaventure Buffalo Center students are welcome to use the computer resources available at the Hilbert library as well.  Besides the online catalog, the library subscribes to a variety of other electronic databases.  Most of these include full-text articles.  You will be provided with a password after completion of the required paperwork at Orientation.  If you did not complete the form at that time, please contact Sue Harrington at the Buffalo Center at 716-646-1500, ext. 10 or

Please visit the libraries' web sites often!!  There are frequent changes to bring you the most up-to-date information and resources.  From the library's web page, you can access databases specifically licensed for St. Bonaventure University students, as well as use specially selected links to Internet resources.
