GENERAL
INFORMATION
Friedsam
Memorial Library endeavors to make the world of information accessible
to the university community. To
that end, the library has built, and continues to build, a strong
traditional collection of materials (over 250,000 books, 1,300
periodical subscriptions and 60,000 bound periodical volumes), along
with access to electronic sources either on CD-ROM, or online through
the Internet. In all this
the library seeks not only to support university instruction with
appropriate materials and access, but also to foster independent
investigation and research by the university community.
Besides
the main collection there are a number of specialized collections that
the library maintains. The
Curriculum Center contains materials and textbooks supporting the
School of Education. The
Government Documents Collection is composed of materials the library
obtains through its status as a regional selective depository of
federal and New York State government publications.
The
library also has collections of unique resources that are of national
and international importance. In
its coverage of the Franciscan movement, the Franciscan Institute
Library is unmatched in the western hemisphere and can be equaled by
only a few European libraries. The
Rare Book Collection contains nearly 10,000 items including late
medieval manuscripts and early printed books.
The Special Collections section of the University Archives
contains important materials on Thomas Merton, Robert Lax and Jim
Bishop.
The
Florentine-style building housing the library has one of the most
beautiful reading rooms in the Western New York area.
The original building, constructed in 1937, was expanded in
1974, retaining as an interior design factor the outside brick walls
and tying the new floors to the old by means of a dramatic staircase.
If you have not been to the SBU campus yet, please come down to
visit!

BORROWING
MATERIALS FROM THE McGRATH LIBRARY at HILBERT
McGrath
Library generously extends borrowing privileges to St. Bonaventure
Buffalo Campus students. Books
may be borrowed for three weeks (fines for overdue materials are 25
cents per day). This
excludes reference books, which are for library use only.
A valid and barcoded student ID (check with the circulation
desk in McGrath Library) is required to check out books.
Students may not take out more than five books per day or have
more than 15 books out at the same time.
A book may be renewed once (unless a "hold" has been
placed on it). The book
must be brought back to the library to be renewed.
If the library catalog indicates that the book that you are
looking for is checked out, stop at the information desk.
You may ask that the book be held for you upon its return.
You will be notified when it becomes available.

PERIODICALS
AT McGRATH LIBRARY
Magazines,
newspapers and journals available at McGrath Library must be
requested at the Information Desk.
A pink slip is filled out and presented with a valid
student ID. Periodicals
are for use inside the library only (not including computer lab or
classrooms), and your ID is held until you return the items to the
desk. Periodicals may
be photocopied.
RESERVE
Faculty
members sometimes place books or articles on reserve.
This allows the material to be available for the entire
class. Reserve
material may be requested at the Information Desk at the Hilbert
Library. It is for
library use only and may be photocopied.
Your ID will be held at the desk.
- An
electronic reserve service is available from Friedsam
Memorial Library via
the Internet. Passwords can be obtained by calling or
e-mailing the SBU
Information Desk at 375-2164, or ref@sbu.edu
. The link to use the service
may be found on the SBU library web page at http://www.sbu.edu
-- Click on LIBRARY.
