Finding Books and Other Materials in the
Library
-
Use FRIAR,
our online catalog.
-
FRIAR
contains records for print and other items that are physically
owned by the library.
-
FRIAR was recently updated to a new
system--the Go-Live date was August 27, 2009, and a
significant upgrade was installed on January 5, 2010 (that
changed the look & feel of the catalog)
-
Electronic journals can be found by
using the journal
locator.
-
Be sure to write down the color code for
the item--consult the signs or use the arrows on the main
staircase to find the right floor where your item is.
-
Many of the items for your class will be
found in the RED or ORANGE sections on the lower level, or
in the GREEN section upstairs (art materials)
Finding Articles
-
Use both the general databases for some of your
research, and be sure to use ATLAS when you're looking for
subject-specific resources.
- Don't forget about Noodletools to help you
cite the material that you find!
What's the Difference Between Finding Articles and Finding
Journals?
- Use databases (find articles) if you are
looking for articles on a specific topic, but you do not have a
specific citation to find (such as the title of an article, with
the journal name, issue, date, paging, etc. provided).
- If you do have a specific citation (example
above), then use the Journal Finder to locate the journal title.
Then navigate through the dates to find the exact issue that you
need.
- Need something that is not available at the
library? Use Interlibrary Loan!
Plagiarism
- Remember to cite what you find!
- If you paraphrase, you need to provide
a citation too! The only time a citation is not needed is when a
fact you are stating is common knowledge. When in doubt, cite!
