FRIEDSAM MEMORIAL LIBRARY

CLAR 111 Resources

Professor: Dr. Hughes
Librarian: Ann M. Tenglund [ateng@sbu.edu or 375-2378]
Date of session: February 22, 2013

Here are some resources to help you with your position paper, whether you are writing from the PRO or CON positions.

Don't forget to think of synonyms that will help you search for resources too.

FIND BOOKS:

Use FRIAR, the library's online catalog.

Hint: Search for keywords of importance (presidential election, undocumented workers, health insurance, etc.) When you find a relevant book, look at the catalog record to find out about additional subject headings for that topic.

WorldCat--a catalog that will help you find materials in other libraries that you could request via InterLibrary Loan.

FIND ARTICLES (Magazine and Journal):
  • SBU Integrated Search to start
  • Academic Search Complete (use the "Subject Terms" link to find the best term to search)
  • ProQuest Research Library
    • In both databases, use the limiters to select either magazines or scholarly/academic journals.
  • CQ Researcher--sample search: any keyword related to the topic
  • Lexis-Nexis Academic can help you find newspaper articles

WEBSITE RESOURCES:

Google
http://www.google.com
Bing:  http://www.bing.com
Ask:  http://www.ask.com
Dogpile: http://www.dogpile.com

FILM OR VIDEO:

You can find special video search options in:
  • Dogpile (use the video tab above the search box)
  • Bing (use the videos link at the top of the page)
  • Google (use the videos link at the top of the page)
  • You can also search for video on specific topics in YouTube, but using a search engine (above) will help you find a greater variety of sources, such as television news feeds
  • You can also try searching specific news or other sites, such as:

Search for films by keyword in the Internet Movie Database at http://www.imdb.com

INTERVIEWS:

Lexis Nexis Academic
--sample search: search your subject and click on "news transcripts" (or whatever content category you need) once the results display
