Public History Career Page Here are some links to help you find a job. I focused on non-profits and museum/public history positions. I have not included any pages dealing with K-12 education. For those of you seeking to enter the business world I strongly suggest that you visit the S.B.U. Career Center. The links below are designed to get you started and some will be more useful than others. Be warned that a fair number, but not all, of the jobs will require either further training or a graduate degree. For a listing of graduate programs in public history visit the National Council on Public History web page. In addition to the web sites listed below I would suggest that you check out state historical societies. These agencies, some state and some non-profit, often list openings. If, in your quest for employment, you find a good source let me know and I will add it to this page. Getting Started These web pages are now loosely organized. I realize that some don't neatly fit into some of these categories, but I hope this helps in beginning the exploration of your options. Don't forget to visit the SBU Career Services You might want to start with "Working Your Degree - History" by CNN. We are not the only ones thinking about what to do with that history degree. On this page I have listed external internship opportunities. You might also want to think about doing a history internship at SBU. You can go the the history internship page for more information. For those interested in graduate school but want to think about the job market, check out Beyond Academe. State and Local Level U. S. State Historical Societies and State Archives Directory State Historical Agencies This link, and the one above, will take you to a directory of state historical agencies and you can go from there. American Association for State and Local History This is a good beginning place for people looking for work in history museums. The AASLH publications has job listings as well as various articles on the practical side of working in a history museum. Jobs for Living History Specialist is also on the AASLH's web page. New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Preservation League of New York State New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission Non Profit Sector (These are not necessarily history jobs but positions where your training and interest in history and humanities might serve you well and be appreciated) Teach for America (This is my one exception regarding education positions. The Teach for America program, however, is somewhat different than the traditional route to an education position in K - 12.) Museum Employment Resource Center Non Governmental Organizations New

Professional Organizations and Web pages with Job Listings The National Council on Public History H-Net Job Guide is primarily a resource for academic jobs but non-academic jobs are listed. If you are interested in historical consulting I would begin by checking the NCPH's list of historical consulting firms. I would also recommend getting on Google and running a search for "historical consulting." American
Society of Association Executives As far as I know there is not a central clearing house for positions in publishing so you will need to look at individual presses. For a list of presses see The Association of American University Presses. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum has just announced (2-24-03) spring and summer paid internships. The National Park Service has just announced its summer internship program. (2-26-03) The Student Conservation Association places students in internships with such agencies as the National Park Service.
