While meetings of Jensen owners are common on the west coast, Jensen enthusiasts from the east and mid-west often found it difficult to negotiate the long journey to attend the events. In August 2000 Aaron Gross organized the first meeting designed to appeal to the Jensen enthusiasts in the east. Over 75 Jensen fans descended on Hiawassie, GA for a weekend celebration of the Jensen marque.
Ken Johnson and Susan Sylvester hosted the 2001 Jensen Nationals at New Glarus, Wisconsin. The quaint Swiss village provided a wonderful backdrop to the weekend’s activities, such as the hill climb (Ken, did you really talk to the local police about that?), funkhana and road rally. The BBQ at a local brewery provided opportunity for some terrific pictures of the group (see our photo album). There was also yodeling….
The 2002 Jensen Internationals (note the change) were hosted in Columbia, MD by a group headed by Sherman Taffel and Dr. Camellia Blackwell. The Tour de Chesapeake kicked off with a dinner cruise through the inner harbor of Baltimore. The following day saw a caravan of Jensen’s cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge for an afternoon devoted to the consumption of crustaceans. Friday found a number of participants shopping at the historic Savage Mill facility (thanks Camellia!) or touring Sherman’s garage, while others formed a caravan to explore the Antietem battlefield. That evening we were treated to a wonderful BBQ by the local British car club.
The final day of the event began with a funkhana near the hotel. The concourse of historic Jensens consisted of approximately 25 well-preserved examples of the marque. The highlight of the banquet was a presentation by Alan Smith, who joined us from the UK, to speak about his experience driving a Jensen CV-8 in the grueling Inca Trail Rally. Alan recounted a remarkable story of finishing the rally despite a variety of handicaps.
