Lindsey Besch '05, Financial Strategist.
Currently I work at Luttner Financial Group, headquartered
in Pittsburgh, PA. We work with families and businesses to make
sure their finances are structured properly. We have specialists in every
area of finance: investment specialists,
insurance specialists, business succession planners, CPA’s, and various
attorneys. I have two roles at Luttner
Financial Group. One of my roles is a financial strategist for individuals and
families. I analyze a family’s current
situation, and then devise alternate plans to make sure that every dollar they
have is positioned correctly, that every aspect of their financial plan
coordinates with each other, and that their financial structure is aligned with
their personal, professional, and financial objectives. Two of my partners and I have recently formed
an Limited Liability Company underneath Luttner Financial Group that focuses
mainly on our clients who are pharmacists or other medical professionals. The
other role I have is a Disability Income Specialist. I work with advisors within my firm as well
as outside my firm to teach them the importance of putting the right strategy
in place to protect their clients’ income.
I either meet with their clients directly or am used as a
behind-the-scenes resource. I also run
training sessions and seminars in the Western Pennsylvania
area.
Graduating from St. Bonaventure with a BS in Mathematics has
helped me bring a new dimension to my firm. The most important aspect that
carried with me is the mindset I gained. I have acquired strength in coming up
with creative strategies as well
as a more logical way to analyze a situation or problem.
A lot of these skills were honed because my
professors truly cared about my success and gave me the personal attention I
needed to truly understand the material. Additionally, being taught by
admirable professors for four years, I have internalized their teaching skills,
which have helped me in the teaching aspect of my career. They have taught me
how to break down complex ideas and explain them in a logical, understandable
fashion. The mindset and abilities I
have acquired from my mathematical studies at St. Bonaventure are strengths
that I will carry with me for the rest of my life and have already put me in a
better position in my professional life.

John Holcomb '89, Professor of Statistics.
Currently, I am an associate professor of statistics in the
mathematics department at Cleveland State
University. I teach a range
of statistics courses from general education conceptual courses to masters
level statistical methodology courses. I also work with other scientists
and investigators by performing the analysis of their data. I have worked
with an economist to predict whether a bank will expand by building new
branches or acquiring another bank, a nutritionist on whether emu meat cooked
in taco flavoring compares well with turkey and beef, and a physician on
whether doctors follow recommended guidelines when prescribing pain relief
medications. I am also a co-author of the text Mathematics with
Applications. I was the 2003 recipient of the American Statistical
Association Waller Award for outstanding teaching of introductory
statistics.
My BS in Mathematics at St. Bonaventure University helped me
to attend graduate school at the State University of New York at
Albany. The
professors at SBU went above and beyond the call of duty as two of them offered
me independent study courses so that I could obtain needed coursework for graduate
school. Further graduate school preparation consisted of completing an
Honors project in mathematics. Although I teach at a much larger school
than SBU, I try to provide my students the personal attention that I received
as a student at SBU. My training at SBU taught me how to think like a
mathematician. I learned how to present arguments in a logical fashion
that also improved my ability to write for a more general audience. I
also learned how to teach from the exemplary professors who took the time to
care about me and my career.
