Activities & Contests Whether you are a mathematics major, an elementary education major, or simply a student with more than a casual interest in mathematics, the Department of Mathematics offers a variety of paths by which you can explore the world of mathematics beyond your coursework. To obtain detailed information about a particular activity or contest, follow the indicated link.

  • Bona's Bonus Problems Mathematical challenges for SBU students. A student who solves any Bona's Bonus Problem in accordance with the Rules receives numerous benefits, including, but not limited to, a tee shirt with a groovy math design.
  • Challenge 24 Competition A regional mathematics competition for middle school students, run by the SBU Department of Mathematics and SBU student volunteers. Participants play the 24 Game. Elementary education majors are particularly encouraged to volunteer.
  • MAA Student Chapter The Mathematical Association of America is the largest professional organization that focuses on undergraduate mathematics education. Students may join for free. In addition to talks and movies, our MAA student chapter sponsors Integral Day in the fall and Pi Day in the spring.
  • MATHCOUNTS Chautauqua/Cattaraugus Regional Contest MATHCOUNTS is a national mathematics competition for middle school students. The SBU Department of Mathematics and SBU student volunteers run one of the regional events.
  • Mathematical Contest in Modeling An annual national contest in applied mathematics for undergraduate students.
  • Pi Mu Epsilon New York Omega Chapter Pi Mu Epsilon is the national mathematics honor society. Election into PME is restricted to qualified undergraduate students. 
  • Putnam Competition The William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition is an exceptionally challenging annual national mathematics competition for undergraduate students. The Department of Mathematics offers the Problem-Solving Seminar (Math 281) in the fall, which helps prepare students for the Putnam.
  • Tutoring The SBU Teaching and Learning Center employs qualified students as mathematics tutors.
  • University of Rochester Mathematical Olympiad The URMO is an annual mathematics competition for undergraduates in Western New York. While the URMO is challenging, it is designed to be friendlier than the Putnam Competition.
