Science Center Construction Updates:  Early November, 2006; mid-February, 2007; early May, 2007; late June, 2007.
See the story directly below and a more recent photo further down this page.

Fall, 2007: Major construction continues on the De La Roche Hall addition. Red tile is being added to the front of the building while work continues inside. The addition, called the William F. Walsh Science Center, is anticipated to open by the spring semester of 2008. The architect for the three-story addition is Cannon Design of Grand Island, New York, and the contractor is E. E. Austin & Son of Falconer, New York. U.S. Representative James T. Walsh---a St. Bonaventure University alumnus---and fellow Congressman Amo Houghton secured a $4.5 million grant from NASA for the construction of the addition. An additional grant from NASA was subsequently obtained, bringing the funds for the project to over $9.5 million. Some of the funds will be used to renovate the original building. The name of the Science Center honors James Walsh's father, who graduated from St. Bonaventure in 1934. Floor plans for the addition are on display on the first floor of De La Roche Hall near the main entrance. A drawing of the finished addition appears below, along with a recent photo of the construction with roughly the same view as the drawing.
Summer, 2007: Renovations inside De La Roche Hall. The hallways of the ground and first floors of De La Roche were renovated with new floors, new ceilings, and new light fixtures to match those in the new addition. The hallways of the second and third floors will be similarly renovated next summer. However, this summer some renovations were applied to all four floors: the walls of the hallways were treated to a new coat of paint and all restrooms were renovated.
May 2, 2007: Two students inducted into national mathematics honor society. Kaitlin Ames and Kris Austin were inducted into the Omega Chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, as a reflection of their excellent academic records and their dedication to mathematics. For more information and photos, see our Pi Mu Epsilon page.
U.S. Population Milestone: The U.S. Census Bureau’s mathematical model for the U.S. population predicts that the population of our nation reached three hundred million (300,000,000) on Tuesday, October 17, 2006. For a wealth of U.S. population data, see http://www.census.gov/population/www/index.html.
April, 2006: Mathematics major Lori Hackett's project on display in Plassmann. Lori Hackett collaborated with sociology major Shannon Doherty to create an impressive exhibit about influential women, currently on display in the main corridor of the first floor of Plassmann Hall. The project was directed by Dr. Karen Robbins and was part of a capstone course for a minor in women's studies. Lori and Shannon created posters celebrating a dozen women. In the photo, Lori stands next to mathematician Charlotte Angas Scott. The other women featured in the display are writer Mary Wollstonecraft, educator Catharine Beecher, suffragist Susan B. Anthony, Saint Clare of Assisi (for whom SBU's Clare College is named), entrepreneur Madam C. J. Walker, chemist Marie Curie, Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O'Connor, journalist Margaret Fuller, suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton, anthropologist Margaret Mead, and activist Dorothy Day.
April 25, 2006: Five students inducted into national mathematics honor society. Kaitlin Drago, Beth Hartnett, Kevin Miller, Susan Minchin, and Craig Vicini were inducted into the Omega Chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, as a reflection of their excellent academic records and their dedication to mathematics. For more information and photos, see our Pi Mu Epsilon page.
December 17, 2005: Mathematics major Abigail Hartnett gave the student speech at SBU's December Recognition Ceremony. With her graduation from SBU, Abby continues a family tradition, as more than half a dozen members of her family are Bonaventure alumni, including both of her parents and all four of her grandparents. Abby minored in business, and she pursued her interest in the subject through the Students in Free Enterprise Program, a business service trip to San Salvador in 2004, and a business service trip to the Grand Bahamas in 2005. Additionally, Abby served as chief-of-staff and a student ambassador for the Student Government Association. Her scholastic excellence earned her a membership in the Phi Eta Sigma National Academic Honors Fraternity.
May 15, 2005: Mathematics major Lindsey Besch received the General Excellence in Science Curriculum award at the 2005 Commencement Ceremony. The award is given to the top-ranked student in all of the sciences in the class of 2005. Lindsey also graduated with honors. Her honors project, completed under the direction of Dr. Doug Cashing, was entitled A Proof that the Standard Normal Function Cannot Be Integrated in Finite Terms.
May 13, 2005: Shuttle astronaut Dr. Kathryn Sullivan visits with science faculty. More information...
