The Franciscan Center for Social Concern at SBU
Anyone interested in social justice, peace, and the environment is encouraged
to go to the Franciscan Center in room 128 of Robinson Hall.
SBU Ministries Located in the Thomas
Merton Center, University Ministries oversees numerous programs. One such
program is Warming House, which is a place
of welcome where men, women, and children in need can come to receive a warm
meal and supportive companionship.
The Journey Project at SBU
The Journey Project matches students with opportunities for service to the greater community, thereby
giving students "a chance to develop skills in a real world
setting, to practice leadership, and to reflect together on their values, goals
and dreams." Along with SBU Ministries, The Journey Project is located in the Thomas
Merton Center. Mike Williams (mwilliam@sbu.edu) is the
director of the Project.
The Challenge 24 Competition Challenge 24 is a
mathematics competition for 4th-, 5th-,
6th-, and 7th-graders, hosted each spring by the SBU
Department of Mathematics. Participants play the 24
Game, in which players are presented with a card showing four whole numbers between 1
and 9, which they must combine to make 24 using only addition, subtraction,
multiplication, or division. All four numbers must be used exactly once, but it
is not necessary to use all four operations.
The Department of Mathematics needs about 30 student volunteers for the Challenge 24
Competition.
If you would like to work with kids who love math, sign up to help us! When the
next Competition is being planned in the spring, volunteers will be
solicited by its coordinator, Dr. Doug Cashing (De La Roche 102), by email and in mathematics classes.
The Peace Corps
"Life is calling. How far will you go?" Free materials about the
Peace Corps are available on the "Job Search" shelf of the
"Resources" bookcase in the Mathematics Suite (room 102) of De La
Roche Hall.
Teach For America
