Requirements for Psychology Majors

Psychology majors must take the following courses, or courses from the following options:

Psychology 101 or 191H

Psychology 201 and 202

Two Set 1 Electives

Two Set 2 Electives

a lab course (Psychology 301, 302, 303, 304, 305, or 306)

Note: each lab course has a set of prerequisite courses

A psychology elective

Senior Seminar (Psychology 401)

Note: the prerequisite for enrolling in Psychology 401 is the prior completion of Psychology 201 and 201, and your psychology lab course

Note: although you are required to take the 10 aforementioned courses to earn a degree in psychology, you would be well advised to take additional psychology courses, especially if you plan to go on to graduate school or a career in psychology.

Plan Ahead

know what lab course you want to take and when it will be offered

plan your schedule to take the prerequisites for that lab course before the lab course is scheduled, and take the lab course before the semester in which you plan to take the Psych, 401

realize that there is limited enrollment in lecture and lab courses; figure out your registration priority (class year, alphabetical placement) for those semesters when you want to take critical courses; the later you will be scheduled to register, the less likely you will be able to get into a course you want, and the more important it is for you to have a back-up plan for such a contingency

to know what lab courses and prerequisites are likely to be offered when, so you can do the necessary planning, check the Plan Ahead schedule on this page and posted around the department

discuss your plans and options with your academic advisor; if you have (or, preferably, if you anticipate, because you are planning ahead!) a problem fulfilling your plan or completing some requirement, discuss it with your advisor while there is still time to solve the problem

Plan Ahead

(as of 3/8/99)

To help you plan the courses you will need in order to fulfill the departmental requirements for your major program, or to prepare for other options and opportunities, here is an advance look at when various labs and elective courses will be offered by the Department of Psychology in the upcoming semesters.

Please treat this as a tentative plan (as of 3/8/99), and one that is therefore not guaranteed. Changes may be required for a variety of staffing or programmatic needs. However, this is our best forecast for the moment. Consult your copy of the University Catalog, your academic advisor, and the course instructor for further information about individual courses.

In the section below, you can read down the column to see what labs or Set 1 or Set 2 electives will be offered in each semester. If you read across each row, you will be able to see when a lab course (indicated in bold & double underline) will be offered and, working backwards, in what prior semester its prerequisite (or recommended) electives will be offered. If you want to take a particular lab course, be sure to take the appropriate prerequisites (Psych. 201-202, offered every fall-spring, and the indicated elective) in advance.

Electives that fulfill the Set 1 or Set 2 requirement are indicated by (1) or (2) after the course number
