Some postmodern thinkers (Lyotard) considered the non-representational art of the avant-garde as the utmost expression of the unseen: the rejection of representation brings such art close to negative theology and the idea of the non-representable nature of God. Many avant-garde artists themselves thought of their non-representational drive in spiritual terms (Kandinsky, Malevich).
