3. Music and the structure of the liturgy
Since music is a temporal art that is introduced at certain times during the liturgy it is crucial to examine the basic structure of Western and Eastern liturgies. The opinions on the importance of music are contrasted with frequent criticism of the use of elaborate music during the liturgy (both in the West and in the East). The section concludes with a study of the evolution of liturgical music both in the West (Roman Catholic, Reformation) and in the East (Greek and Russian Orthodox).
